The Inevitable Sickbay, Part I

Mission:
Mission 1: Through the Janus Gate
Location: Deck 8 Main Sickbay
Timeline: MD002 - 0900 hours
The past several days had been busy for Lorek filled with meetings, reading personnel files, meeting his staff, and getting a handle on his new department. Now they were underway for their, well his, first mission he knew he had to face the inevitable…..a visit to Sickbay while he waited for the data from Engineering and Operations.
It wasn’t that he was afraid of going to a medical facility; no….....it was more the smell that bothered him….an antiseptic smell…..a smell that seemed unnatural in it’s origins. However regulations were regulations so he would ‘suck it up’, as his mother would say, and do what was necessary for his duties setting the example for his people as Chief.
Walking into the main sickbay......there it was….that dreadful smell. Seeing a Doctor, Lorek made his way over to his location “Excuse me Doctor, I am Lieutenant Lorek Chief Security/Tactical officer. Regulations require me to have my boarding examination” he stated ready to get this over with as quickly as possible.
Nathan looked up from the medical report he had been reviewing as the security chief approached.
The moment Lorek stopped in front of him, Nathan noticed two things.
First, the lieutenant appeared perfectly healthy.
Second, he looked like he’d rather be almost anywhere else. Nathan smiled.
“Lieutenant Lorek. Nice to meet you.”
His eyes briefly swept over the security officer.
“Good news. You don’t appear to be bleeding. That immediately puts you ahead of about half my usual clientele.”
Nathan stood and extended a hand for a shake.
“Doctor Nathan Lake.”
Shaking the offered hand "Doctor Lake nice to meet you as well" as Lorek paused "Logically with the name you must be the CMO.....now I can exterminate two flying creatures with one rock" he replied not realizing he had butchered the old saying "You are very perceptive Doctor I doubt most patients require a boarding examination would be bleeding."
Nathan blinked once. Then a smile slowly spread across his face.
“Two flying creatures with one rock?”
He repeated it carefully, as if reviewing a fascinating new medical discovery.
“I have to admit, Lieutenant, that’s a good one.”
Picking up the medical scanner, he motioned toward the biobed.
“Though as a doctor, I feel obligated to point out that if you’re throwing rocks at flying creatures, you’ve probably already created the reason you’re visiting Sickbay.”
He said jokingly.
The scanner activated with a soft hum. Nathan gestured for Lorek to sit.
Sitting on the offered biobed Lorek still wasn't quite picking up on the Doctor's quip as he merely replied "Indeed" before adding to the conversation "I have previously met with a few of the department heads to inform them if they should need the services of security not to hesitate to call; I would like to offer you the same courtesy Doctor."
Nathan nodded appreciatively as he brought the medical scanner over Lorek’s shoulders and chest. The blue and red blinking beam swept methodically across the lieutenant, feeding a steady stream of data to the nearby console.
“I appreciate that, Lieutenant, and the offer goes both ways.”
The console chirped, and he added.
“So far, the Resolute has been remarkably peaceful. But I have only been on board for just over a day.
Nathan smiled faintly.
"I have been aboard for a few days now and yes the ship has been rather quiet as we have taken on new crew" then Lorek paused "However from what was discussed at the briefing logically that will change in the near future" he stated .
Letting his statement hang in the air for a few moments.
"That will require us to gel as a crew rather quickly with each of us adding to the collective puzzle to achieve a positive outcome."
Nathan nodded as he studied the scan results scrolling across the console.
“I have a feeling you’re right.”
Nathan began to enter a notation in Lorak’s medical file.
“And I agree with you about the crew.”
His tone became more earnest.
“A starship isn’t a collection of departments. It’s a collection of people who have to trust one another before they truly know one another.”
"Very well stated Doctor" as he paused noticing the Doctor writing something down so he inquired "Is there some concern with my scans I should know about?"
Nathan looked up from the console toward the Lieutenant, then back at the display with a small smile.
“I was wondering how long it would take you to ask that.”
He tapped the screen one final time before closing Lorek’s medical file.
“But no.”
He folded his arms loosely.
“Nothing’s wrong. You’re simply discovering one of the unfortunate realities of medicine. Can you guess what that is?”
Thinking for a brief moment "Logically I would say the never-ending note taking to keep the crew's records relevant" Lorek responded "Am I close?"
Nathan smiled.
“Absolutely.”
Nathan turned off the biobed internal sensors.
“Is there anything I can help with?”
"No I am good Doctor and thank you for your time" Lorek responded as he stood and headed towards the exit.
