Mission: Prologue: Taking On Crew
Location: Operations - USS Resolute
Timeline: MD004 - 1100 Hours

The pieces of the puzzle were dropping into place for Lorek between all the meetings, reviewing more personal files he ever thought possible for a department, and setting some goals for the people in Security/Tactical while getting to know those somewhat who weren't shy about speaking up in a large group.

Now it was time to start on another piece of his puzzle.

Exiting the lift on Deck 4 Lorek headed toward the Operations Suite eager to meet another department head knowing it was important to put a name with a face as well as being known himself to encourage a good working relationship.

The ship was more than just his department.

The area contained all sorts of readout screens with associated consoles as well as a large holographic display in the middle of the area showing the entire ship. Looking around the large room Lorek saw a woman talking to some of the others. Walking over "Excuse me I am looking for the Operations Chief if you could point me in the right direction" he stated keeping his Vulcan demeanor for now.

Dani dismissed the others with a wave of her hand and turned to the new arrival. She didn't recognize his face, but by his uniform and pips, he was a lieutenant in security, so she could make an educated guess. "I'm her. How can I help you, lieutenant?" she asked cheerfully.

"Lieutenant Fox, please allow me to introduce myself. I am Lieutenant Lorek....Chief of security/tactical. Over the next few days, it is my intention to make myself known to the department heads aboard; you are just the fortunate one to be first on my list" as he paused a moment scanning the room "May I say this is a most impressive area" he replied in a usual Vulcan manner.

"It is. I can say that because I have nothing to do with it." Dani smiled as she looked around the room. "We take care of a lot of little things and need to be able to track them." Her attention turned back to the security chief. "Welcome aboard. Is there anything in particular you need from us? If not, do you want to sit somewhere and talk for a few minutes?"

"Thank you, Lieutenant. It is very pleasant to be aboard. To answer your query, quite the opposite. My purpose is to extend the services of security to your department whenever they are needed and yes I would like to get to know you better since I am sure we will be working together from time to time," he responded, looking forward to the conversation with Dani.

She nodded and signaled to another officer where she'd be, then led the security chief to her office. Once inside, she turned. "Would you like a drink or something from the replicator?"

"I am fine, but thank you for offering," Lorek replied, then sat. "Given your position, logically one would believe you have been aboard for some time and not a newbie like some of us" he commented with a grin, wondering if Dani would pick up in his uniqueness.

She was momentarily surprised by the smile, but said nothing. Most Vulcans she'd worked with were stoic, but once in a while, she'd come across one who was a bit more relaxed. Still, it wasn't something she expected.

Dani took a seat before responding. "I've been on board for a year, but I was recently promoted to department head. So, in some ways I'm new as well." She paused for a moment before asking. "Where did you serve before coming here?"

"I was promoted to the chief's position and was reassigned to the Endeavor for four years before coming to the Resolute" as he paused momentarily " The Endeavor was a somewhat smaller ship and with less people in the department so with a larger ship and crew here, logically it was a good career move. And you Lieutenant, where did you serve prior to here?"

"I was on the Gallowglas. What I like about operations is that each ship has the same components, but they also have their own personalities. While the Gallowglas was a bit of a curmudgeon, it could also sing."

"Well stated Lieutenant. I have to agree each ship does have its own personality and the Resolute I believe has a driving purpose while having the teeth to see that purpose through; largely due to those in command. Technology does play a part in the components of a ship be it more or less advanced; at least in tactical it does" Lorek replied with a bit of an explanation.

"That's true. The Resolute does seem to take after her name. She doesn't give up easily." Dani considered him for a moment. "But I don't often hear someone from security comment on a ship's personality. I think it's a good thing."

"Understanding the ship is a step forward towards understanding her crew; which in security is paramount" Lorek replied. As much as he was enjoying his conversation with Dani it was time to bring their conversation full circle "To get back to my reason for stopping by. If at any time you sense a personality conflict among your people or from an outside source, please do not hesitate to call upon security for assistance and my staff will respond as quickly as possible; better to defuse something small before it becomes something much larger" came the explanation as he stood "Thank you Lieutenant for your time but I have one other department head I wish to meet with today."

"If I find that I need your help to deal with a situation, I will definitely ask," Dani assured him. Although she hoped there would never be a time she could not deal with her department herself. But you did need to at least be open to any possibility.

"Thank you for stopping by," she said with a friendly smile. "It was nice meeting you."

She followed him back to main operations and went back to overseeing the day's list of tasks to be completed.

With a polite nod Lorek turned and made his way to a lift "Main Engineering" came the request. Moments later he walked into Main Engineering. Looking around he saw the massive vertical warp core emitting a blue light as it pulsated inside. Lorek noticed a Lieutenant talking to some of the staff as he approached "Excuse me Lieutenant, I am looking for the Chief" he stated "I am Lieutenant Lorek Chief of Security/Tactical."

Standing with both hands on the drafting table as he shifted through various renders of the Resolutes latest structural, port side nacelle strut. Some of the readings were downright funky and he wasn't yet sure if it were the sensors or the strut. He barely registered that someone had entered engineering and it took his mind a few moments longer to remember he was the Chief of Engineering here.

Glancing up, he nodded to the security chief and then returned his eyes to the renders as he swiveled the sensor view and compared them to the real time readings from both internal tell-tales and the port side secondary array. "Hey ya Lieutenant. I'm Wynning Pi. Nice to meet you. What can I do for you."

"You as well. As for my purpose for stopping by....I am attempting to go around and meet most of the department heads before security is actually needed" Lorek replied seeing how busy the Chief was "If this is a bad time I could come back at a later time if that would be more convenient for you."

Shaking his head and waving a hand in the air to clear the renderings. "A new Engineering Chief who isn't busy might be in trouble. But all that is just chasing down Gremlins to see if they're fun trouble or trouble-trouble." Chuckling, Wyn straightened and said, "I hope I won't need security here. Unlikely to have any brawls from what I've seen."

"That is not a bad thing, of course, but the offer still stands" as Lorek paused a moment "Should a hostile force ever become a threat, especially in Engineering my people will be all over that situation."

Letting his statement hang in the air for a few moments.

"Just to satisfy my own curiosity, have you been a Chief previously to the Resolute" Lorek inquired with interest.

"Nope. First time as a DH," Wyn acknowledged, wondering if the..at least partial Vulcan was looking to sort out a pecking order. "But the work is mostly the same, I think. Just more of it looking both up and down. What about you?"

"Served on the USS Endeavor for four years as Chief prior to being assigned here and yes the duties were about the same as an assistant except you are the one sitting in front of command if or when things go sideways" Lorek replied as he glanced to the warp core "About the only thing I know of engineering is what I need to know as far as the tactical station is concerned. I have to say though the warp core is most impressive."

"You're just being modest, I'm sure," Wyn said as he rolled his shoulders slightly. "Any officer that gets through Academy and achieves a Chief spot aboard is almost always well grounded in the basics of engineering and operations. It's the lifeblood of a crew, just like my warp core is the heart of the ship. Or something like that. But I have to agree, she's a beauty," the engineer said as he looked up at the corp as it hummed in the center of the compartment, reaching up to a second level. If you want some more experience in engineering, I can always use an extra set of hands."

"Yes, the basics are taught but by the looks of your department it appears we are way past the basics; but I will keep your offer in mind for the future. Since I am confident you have a lot of work to attend to I will let you get back to your duties. Thank you for your time Lieutenant and it was pleasant to meet you." Lorek replied.

"Good to meet you too," Wyn said, watching the security chief exit, his brain wondering at the odd interaction. Then he shrugged and turned back to the drafting table.
