Mission: Prologue: Taking On Crew
Location: XO's Office
Timeline: MD002 - 0950 hours

Wyn had left his shoulder bag with the transporter tech, tapped into the first wall display outside of the transporter room and had located the ships XO. A query reassured him that he’d arrived during the listed office hours and he added himself to Commander Vren'desh schedule, since there was an opening and made his way using a follow me program to the XO’s ship, enjoying the feel of his booted feet (even if the boots did pinch a little) on the starship’s carpeting and made sure to keep a smile on his face as he passed the crew and nod in acknowledgment as he went.

He didn’t need to be labeled as anything right off the bat. People would have to take the time to decide if they liked him or not.

Wyn worried about such things upon occasion.

Arriving at the XO’s office, he tripped the annunciator and said, “Commander Vren’desh, Lieutenant Wynning Pi reporting aboard if you have a moment sir?" The XO's office door was open but he just barely peered in just in case.

"I do Lieutenant. Welcome to the Resolute. Would you like some rachtijino?" Vren'desh had reviewed the Lieutenant's record with the Captain. He was a stellar engineer and the Klingon was glad to have him aboard. "Please. Sit down."

Taking the indicated seat, but sitting forward attentively, he said, "A rachtijino would be great sir. Thank you. We engineers tend to run on caffeine so I'm probably about due for a top up."

Vren'Desh poured two cups. "It is my own special blend. My take on a blend that has been in my House for generations." He placed the cup in front of the engineer and then sat down. "Your record precedes you. There were a number of candidates for this posting and your record rose to the top as it were. Now that you are here. What do you intend to do?" The Klingon expected something to the effect of my job to the best of my ability. However, he hoped there would be more to the answer.

Wyn took a moment, not terribly surprised by the conversation but wanting to take the appropriate amount of time.

First and foremost, an engineer should never just jump when command asked if they could do something.

And you always exaggerated how much time something was going to take you.

"First off sir," he said with a sip of the rachtijino, "This is excellent, thank you."

"As to what I plan to do, the first thing is to get a handle on the department and personnel. I've been going over records, but I think they only tell part of the picture. The last Chief left everything in hand, from what I can see. So, while I'm getting the department in hand, I would turn to you and the Captain and see what you want addressed."

"That all will be good for the first few days. After that we'll get busy with some level one diagnostics on the larger systems while the warp drive is down," Wyn said, looking at his new boss. "Side projects are going to include updating some of the replicators and holo-decks to make them better. Quality of life stuff for the crew."

"When you go over the ship's systems pay special attention to the slipstream drive. Once we get out there, I want to be able to return in a hurry should the need arise." Vren'Desh was always cautious, especially for a Klingon. "The quality of life upgrades is a great idea. Keeping people happy, keeps them productive. This ship has to be more than a ship, it has to be a home."

"Err. Yessir," Wyn said, his mind shuffling the priority cards in his head. "I didn't see anything in the hand-off data. Has there been hiccups in the Slipstream, sir? I know the phase variance field fluctuations can sometimes get flustered. Regardless of how long the tech has been out, they get unhappy with doing double duty." Realizing he was blathering on, Wyn stopped and said, "I'll check and see when the last time the Deflector dish was given a Level One. Sir."

"Nothing has been reported about the drive as of yet. However, I would be a poor XO if I did not want to nip things before they happened. These new slipstreams have a habit of breaking when you most need them. I want to make sure that does not happen. A Sovereign Class is a city with a warp drive. Bigger ships mean more things to break. It is going to take a special kind of person to stay on top of it all." Vren'desh was already confident that they had their person. The question was whether Wyn thought he was the right person.

Shifting his shoulders about, his eyes wandered as Wyn said "It's all about scale, Commander. My old boss taught me to take care of the little things and the big things will mostly take care of themselves. Which means I won't be taking anything for granted aboard the Resolute until I've laid eyes on every component myself, or as much as I can without taking the ship half apart. I don't know if I'm special in the good or bad sense but we're going to find out." This last was said with a nod to himself before he smiled and he shifted his eyes back to Vren'desh's.

"You are aboard this ship and part of the crew. That makes you more special than you know." The words were almost poetic, especially for a Klingon.

"Yessir," was all Wyn could think to say. "Any special projects the Captain or you want me to look at? With running through the rapids of minutia from the sensors, having a diversionary project can't hurt."

"There is something that I picked up early in my career aboard the Tomahawk. Tie the sensors into the tactical grid. The scientific data that is taken in during general operation can be interpreted to give the ship a tactical advantage. You never know when information such as that can be useful." This technique was something his old friend Harold had taught him. It was perhaps the first of many things that Harold had taught Vren'Desh.

Nodding, Wyn let his mind play with that and said, "Easy enough to configure the primary, pairing down the filters for pure tactical use," the engineer thought out loud. "They already do that but you could pair more of the routines to the secondary arrays. I'll double check all of the tactical systems are updated to the latest and or best software packages. Maybe check the photons all have updated drivers too, though they should do that on the weekly house-keeping system checks."

Wyn could see the work piling up and pushed down flickers of anxiety that had been twitching in his stomach. "Going to take some time on all of that. I'll have a priorities list for you and the Captain by our next staff meeting and you can tell me if I have my priorities straight." This last was said with a wry grin pulling at his mouth.

"Sounds good Lieutenant. Thank you." Vren'Desh, thought that this engineer would be a good fit. He knew that the Resolute would be in good hands.

"Aye sir. By your leave?" Wyn said, standing.

"Dismissed." Vren'Desh said with a smile. There was something the Klingon appreciated about dedication to procedure.
