Mission: Prologue: Taking On Crew
Location: XO's Office
Timeline: MD003 - 1300 Hours

As per the Captain's orders Lorek needed to meet with the XO; something he was looking forward to instead of it being a case of just following orders. From what the Captain had shared with him during their initial meeting, Vren'desh appeared to be all Klingon; something Lorek hadn't experienced since his training with his mentor and friend T'Sher House of Duson.

Approaching the door Lorek palmed the chime waiting hands clasped behind his waist awaiting recognition from his superior officer.

Vren'desh sat at his desk and regarded his bat'leth for a moment. It was something that he did when he was lost in thought. The crew that the Captain and he had assembled was some of the best in Starfleet. There was something in the air of sorts, glory was upon them all. The door chime brought him back to the here and now. "Enter."

Lorek entered upon hearing the Commander. Walking in he went within three feet of the desk as he snapped to attention "Commander Vren'desh Son of Rukas I am Lieutenant Lorek Chief Sec/Tac.....it is an honor to meet a Klingon warrior." he stated making sure he was respectful the Klingon way.

"The honor is mine Lieutenant. Welcome to the Resolute, your record does precede itself. Please sit." Vren'Desh motioned to a seat in front of his desk. "I must confess that your service record did jump to the front in my eyes. It is not often that a Vulcan receives the training of my people."

Lorek fulfilled the request sitting back straight, feet on the floor, and his hands in his lap "Technically I am half Vulcan; my mother is Human" he explained "The training from T'Sher House of Duson taught me respect and honor while showing me how both sides of my heritage could coexist; I owe my mentor and friend a great deal."

"House of Duson is known to a large portion of the Empire. A formidable training indeed. Have you studied the Mok Bara?" Vren'Desh knew that Vulcans were a force to be reckoned with if they needed to be. However, he was curious to see exactly how much of Klingon training he had been through.

"Yes I have, my mentor used that to teach me discipline......a discipline that was more grounded than Vulcan discipline; which was lacking in my life. That same discipline showed me how to balance my Vulcan and Human sides while leaning into one side or the other as different situations required" Lorek replied feeling a Klingon familiarity with his superior.

Vren'Desh understood Lorek's point although he disagreed with it. "I think Vulcan discipline is just as grounded, and in some ways more so than Klingon. We Klingons just use discipline differently. Where Vulcans use it to regulate their emotional responses to a given situation. Klingons express our emotions openly, and in many cases with pleasure. We use our discipline more as a guide. Something to follow, and learn from."

Thinking for a moment "Yes and that emotional difference allowed me to strike a balance between being part Vulcan and part Human without the conflict that resided within me for many years" as Lorek paused "Perhaps I did not phrase my previous statement correctly."

Vren'Desh smiled. "It was said that a Klingon and Vulcan could never discuss philosophy and here we are. It is my belief that the balance between Vulcan and Human is what makes you uniquely suited for the position aboard this vessel. Vulcan logic, with Human gut instinct." He paused and shifted his weight in his chair. The Captain was right when she said that he viewed this ship and its crew as his family and house. Now, he wanted to see why Lorek wanted to be in this family. "But, tell me why you want to be on the Resolute? Your record showed you to be qualified for a number of open postings."

Thinking for a few moments organizing his thoughts "I will share with you my response when Captain Venn had basically the same query. I was aboard the USS Endeavor for four years and as time progressed I felt myself becoming quite comfortable there" as he paused a moment "I did not want my level of comfort to make me complacent to the point I would not see situations clearly any longer. The thought of a larger ship with a bigger department would challenge me thereby refocusing my duties to be a better Officer and well as a better person" then paused once again to let his words carry weight "That is not to say I will not make mistakes along the way; I am not infallible and for me to think otherwise is illogical. My former C.O. highly recommended this opportunity citing I should seriously consider applying for this position.....which obviously I did" Lorek explained hoping the Commander would see his intentions clearly.

"Yes, I know. You saw the opportunity to further your career and so you did. That is pretty much what anyone would have done. The answer that I am looking for is why this ship, why this mission? Does anything about what we are projected to accomplish here appeal to you?' Vren'desh sought to see what Lorek felt, if Lorek felt. Klingons believed that a person's worth was revealed in their feelings.

Lorek sensed the Commander was looking for a more personal response; something that was heartfelt. Reorganizing his thoughts he responded "Why this ship? The Resolute is a Sovereign class ship.....one of the fastest and well armed class ships in the fleet. My former C.O. believes Captain Venn is one of the finest C.O.s in Starfleet with her no nonsense approach and commitment. As far as what appeals to me? I believe I can be an asset to a ship and crew of this caliber knowing we will make a difference wherever or whatever we are called to accomplish."

Then something strange happened....something he had not experienced for quite some time. Lorek just stared through the XO's window out into the vastness of space.....silent for several seconds. Not intending to be disrespectful but rather allowing his human side to intercede on his behalf.

Refocusing back to Vren'desh " When I beamed aboard I looked around sensing this is where I belonged.....where I was meant to be....where I could make the greatest impact and where I could become part of a family" he concluded after putting himself out there for the Commander to see.

Vren'Desh leaned back in his chair and nodded. "Welcome aboard the Resolute."
