2385 Timeline: The Fall of Romulus
January–May 2385 — The Romulan Gambit
- Reeling from Borg losses, Klingon aggression, Reman unrest, and the continuing star crisis, the Romulan Senate considers Dominion vassalage as a way to preserve limited autonomy.
- Diplomatic feelers are sent to the Dominion, but the Senate deliberately addresses the Gamma Quadrant Founders, insulting the surviving Alpha Quadrant Founders on Earth, Cardassia Prime, and Terok Nor.
- The DPI intercepts the invitation, triggering a furious response from the Alpha Quadrant Founders, who fear being bypassed and replaced.
- A Dominion delegation is assembled to negotiate Romulus’s submission, including at least one Founder, senior Vorta, and a large Jem’Hadar escort fleet.
- Publicly, the Romulan Senate prepares for integration talks; privately, Sela, the Tal’Shiar, and selected military leaders activate contingency plans built into the star-stabilisation project over several years.
- Romulan scientists, aided by select Vulcan exiles and classified research from captured Borg technology, refine the infrastructure needed to either stabilise or catastrophically destabilise the Romulan home star.
- Most Vulcan scientists are kept unaware of the final plan, though some realise parts of their work are being concealed or redirected.
- Reman labour forces are pushed deeper into the star-crisis infrastructure and secret evacuation preparations, while Shinzon uses the secrecy, exploitation, and fear to strengthen his following.
- By May, Romulus appears ready to kneel to the Dominion, but Sela and the Tal’Shiar have already turned the dying star into a weapon.
June–July 2385 — The Cleansing Flame
- During high-level negotiations on Romulus, Romulan engineers trigger the hidden destabilisation system built into the star-crisis infrastructure.
- The Romulan home star collapses into a catastrophic artificial supernova, destroying Romulus, Remus, and much of the surrounding system.
- The Dominion delegation, including a Founder, senior Vorta, Jem’Hadar escorts, and hundreds of Dominion vessels, is annihilated in the blast.
- The destruction of Remus devastates the Reman people, but some Reman military and labour groups survive due to earlier secret evacuations and Tal’Shiar contingencies.
- Shinzon survives and emerges from the disaster with greater influence, using Reman losses to condemn both Romulan elites and Dominion manipulation.
- The surviving Romulan Senate relocates to New Romulus, declaring the disaster a national tragedy caused by Dominion treachery.
- Sela helps shape the official narrative, framing Romulus as a martyr world that chose death over Dominion slavery.
- By July, the Dominion’s Alpha Quadrant command structure has been badly damaged, while the Romulan Star Empire survives through deception, sacrifice, and propaganda.
August–December 2385 — Dominion Chaos
- The Tal’Shiar quietly celebrates the success of the operation, having preserved key archives, personnel, and strategic assets through secret evacuations.
- Romulan propaganda blames the Dominion for Romulus’s destruction, rallying scattered worlds and resistance groups against Founder rule.
- The remaining Alpha Quadrant Founders on Earth, Cardassia Prime, and Terok Nor respond with fury, accusing Vorta administrators, Romulan infiltrators, and local collaborators of incompetence or betrayal.
- The wormhole is restricted to high-priority Dominion traffic as Alpha and Gamma Dominion relations deteriorate further.
- Surviving Jem’Hadar and Vorta forces argue over chain of command, with some regional commanders becoming more brutal, isolated, or unreliable.
- Reman survivors fracture between those following Shinzon, those seeking vengeance against Romulus, and those willing to work with anti-Dominion resistance networks.
- Lantern-linked cells exploit the chaos, opening quiet contacts with Tal’Shiar defectors, Reman factions, and Dominion administrators frightened by the Founders’ reprisals.
- By the end of 2385, Romulus is gone, New Romulus has risen, and the Dominion’s grip on the Alpha Quadrant has been shaken by one of the most devastating betrayals in modern history.
