Personality & Traits
| General Overview | William, or Billy as he prefers to be called, is a skilled engineer who likes to believe he earned his place through hard work rather than his family's reputation. Years of success at Earth Spacedock were overshadowed by the death of his younger brother, a strained relationship with his father, and a scandal involving his ex-husband, a Romulan spy. Friendly, supportive, and collaborative on duty, Billy encourages those around him to grow while balancing creativity and intuition with sound engineering principles. Away from work, however, he keeps people at a distance. Embarrassed by the scandal and carrying the weight of his family's expectations, he has thrown himself into his work, hoping that a fresh start aboard the USS Resolute will finally allow him to move forward. | |
| Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths Engineering & Physics Strong foundation in engineering and physics, with particular expertise in warp dynamics and starship design. Emotional Intelligence Reads the emotions of others well and knows how to support them, even if he rarely shares his own. Weaknesses Emotional Isolation Keeps his own struggles private, making it difficult for others to truly know him. Self-Imposed Pressure Constantly feels the need to prove himself and often takes on more work than he should. Difficulty Letting Go Dwells on past mistakes and has trouble forgiving himself, particularly where family and his failed marriage are concerned. |
|
| Ambitions | Originally, he once hoped to one day take over the shipyards at Earth Spacedock and work on the greatest ships of the line. Now, following the scandal, that ambition has shifted. He is focused on getting as far away as possible from the people and life he knew, and starting over as an engineer aboard one of those starships instead. Promotions, friendships, and, God forbid, romance are not high on his list of concerns. |
|
| Hobbies & Interests | Keeps up with horseback riding on the holodeck and still enjoys it when he has the opportunity, along with rock climbing and running as a way to stay fit and clear his head. He builds model ships in bottles by hand, a precise and time-consuming hobby that requires patience and attention to detail. He also enjoys cooking and has set up a small kitchen space in his quarters, preferring to use non-replicated ingredients to prepare elaborate meals that he now usually eats alone. |
| Personal History | William Harper Lancaster III, born in London into a family with a long tradition of military service, dating back to before the founding of the Federation and even earlier to the British Royal Navy. Raised alongside his younger brother, Henry, Billy grew up determined to live up to the Lancaster name, with both boys expected to follow generations of officers into Starfleet. They were inseparable friends and fierce rivals, pushing each other to excel in academics, athletics, and eventually flight training. That future came crashing down when a competitive shuttle race ended in disaster, killing Henry and leaving Billy badly injured. Though the accident was ruled no fault of his own, he never forgave himself. His recovery delayed his entry into Starfleet Academy by a year, and an argument with his father, who blamed him for Henry's death, led Billy to abandon the Command track in favor of Engineering. There he discovered a passion for starship design, warp theory, and the technical challenges of keeping Starfleet's finest vessels flying. Graduating with honors, Billy earned a coveted assignment at Earth Spacedock, where he spent the next several years learning every aspect of maintenance, damage control, and eventually large-scale starship refits. His dedication and enthusiasm quickly earned him a place on the refit teams responsible for some of Starfleet's most prestigious vessels, and he found genuine fulfillment in helping build and improve the ships that represented the Federation at its best. The work also gave him a reputation as a creative engineer and dependable teammate who cared as much about the people he worked with as the systems they maintained. During his time at Spacedock, Billy met S'ren, an engineer he initially clashed with before mutual respect grew into a relationship and eventually marriage. For several years, he believed he had finally found both the career and personal life he had always wanted. That illusion shattered when Starfleet Security revealed that S'ren had disappeared and was suspected of being a Romulan intelligence operative who had infiltrated Spacedock. Although Billy was completely cleared of any involvement, the investigation left him humiliated and questioning his own judgment. Unable to escape the whispers, the memories, or the weight of his own self-doubt, he requested a transfer away from Earth. Rather than chase promotion or prestige, Billy accepted an engineering officer assignment aboard the USS Resolute, hoping distance from his old life would give him a chance to begin again. |
