Personality & Traits

General Overview Tav, as he prefers to be called, is a charismatic and daring pilot known for his confidence, quick wit, and exceptional instincts behind the controls. He thrives in challenging situations, embracing the pressure and uncertainty that would make others hesitate. Tav relies on creativity, adaptability, and improvisation, often finding solutions others might overlook when faced with unexpected obstacles.

Charming, playful, and flirtatious, Tav has a reputation for teasing humor, outrageous stories, and a willingness to take risks others would avoid; he also has a record full of problems, mostly instigated by him. However, beneath the confidence is an officer who carries the weight of his choices deeply. He believes he can always pull off the impossible, sometimes confusing survival with success. Tav does not take risks because he does not care about the consequences, but because he genuinely believes he can be the person who saves the day. People have been hurt because of that overconfidence. Learning where courage ends and recklessness begins remains his greatest challenge.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths
Tav’s greatest strength as a pilot is his instinctive understanding of flight and his ability to adapt when situations move beyond the expected. He excels under pressure, combining confidence, creativity, and unconventional thinking to find solutions others may overlook. His natural charisma makes him an effective leader, and his Betazoid abilities allow him to better understand the thoughts and emotions of those around him, helping him know when to encourage, challenge, or reassure his team. Tav has a talent for turning tense situations into moments of focus, using humor and confidence to keep others moving forward.

Weaknesses
Tav’s greatest weakness is his belief that there is always a way out if he is skilled enough, fast enough, or willing to try something others would not. He can mistake a successful outcome for proof that a risky decision was the right one, making him prone to pushing boundaries that exist for a reason. Routine operations test his patience, and he can become restless when there is no challenge to overcome; when he's restless, he makes stupid decisions, and loses control. Despite his confident exterior, Tav struggles with disappointing others and carries the guilt of any consequence caused by his choices.
Ambitions Tav wants a career that keeps him challenged and allows him to experience everything the galaxy has to offer. He hopes to one day command a starship of his own, seeking the freedom and responsibility to lead others while continuing to explore new places and cultures. Beyond his career, Tav wants a life filled with adventure, meaningful friendships, a romantic fling in every port of call, and experiences that are worth remembering.
Hobbies & Interests Tav loves a challenge, especially when there is a chance to have fun, impress a crowd, or create a memorable story that he might exaggerate later. He has a reputation for enthusiastically accepting almost any challenge and will try almost anything once, whether it involves an extreme sport, unfamiliar food, unusual alien customs, or something his friends insist is a terrible idea. He enjoys Parrises Squares, Velocity, zero-gravity sports, and other competitive activities that test his reflexes and confidence.

Tav is also an accomplished dancer, having grown up attending formal Betazoid social events, though he prefers modern styles and the freedom to improvise. He enjoys live music, exploring new cultures, and using the holodeck for experiences ranging from survival challenges and historical recreations to competitive simulations. He regularly plays three-dimensional chess, kal-toh, and other strategy games that challenge his ability to think ahead and adapt.

Personal History Born in Medara, the capital city of Betazed, Tav grew up as a member of one of the planet’s most influential families. His mother, Velara Rhos, was a prominent political figure who would eventually be elected as the leader of Betazed, placing the Rhos family at the highest levels of society. As one of four sons in a traditionally matriarchal household, Tav was raised with the expectation that he would uphold the family name through public service. Intelligent and naturally gifted, he performed well academically, though he often struggled with routine and preferred challenges that allowed him to think creatively. He was competitive in sports, socially confident, and known from an early age for his charm, humor, and refusal to simply follow expectations.

Tav remained close with his family, particularly his brothers, but struggled with the future that had been planned for him. His mother arranged a formal courtship with a young woman from another prominent Betazoid family, viewing it as a natural continuation of the Rhos legacy. While he respected her and understood the political and cultural significance of the arrangement, Tav knew he could not live the life expected of him. As a gay man in a family where tradition and public image carried great importance, the expectation that he would enter a marriage chosen for him became the moment he finally pushed back against the path laid out before him.

Tav's fascination with flight began during his teenage years, when he first took control of an atmospheric craft and discovered a freedom he had never found in the carefully structured world of Betazoid politics and academia. What started as a hobby quickly became a passion, and he began spending more of his free time studying navigation, piloting, and the technology behind flight. His decision to pursue Starfleet was met with disappointment from some members of his family, who believed he was abandoning the opportunities available to him, but Tav saw it as the first choice he had made entirely for himself. He believed service was not defined by a title or position, but by the willingness to be there when others needed him.

At Starfleet Academy, Tav studied Astrophysics while focusing his training on flight control, navigation, and advanced astrogation. He performed well in flight simulations and navigation courses, particularly those involving unfamiliar environments and rapidly changing conditions. During his final year, he served as flight leader of Cadet Flight Squadron 47, "The Peregrines." During a large-scale search and rescue exercise, his squadron lost their primary navigation data after a simulated sensor failure left them unable to locate a damaged vessel. Rather than continue following the original search pattern, Tav used stellar readings, manual calculations, and his squadron's remaining sensor data to locate the target. His solution succeeded, but he received a demerit after investigators determined he had taken his shuttle formation into an area of unstable gravimetric activity that had been specifically marked as off-limits.

Tav was a popular cadet who competed in Parrises Squares and Velocity and often organized unofficial challenges among his classmates. During the Kobayashi Maru, Tav refused to accept that there was no solution. He pushed himself and his squadron to exhaustion, searching for any possible answer until they were eventually ordered to stop. The result frustrated him more than any failure ever had, not because he could not accept losing, but because he rejected the idea that some situations were simply unwinnable. Rather than changing his belief that impossible odds could be overcome, the experience only reinforced his determination to be the person who keeps trying when others have already given up.

After graduating Starfleet Academy in 2395, Tav was assigned as an Ensign Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Calypso, an Intrepid-class exploration vessel conducting survey operations along the Federation frontier. His first years were spent learning the less glamorous parts of the job, from long-range navigation to routine transport runs and emergency response. Tav quickly earned a reputation as a talented pilot, but also one who needed reminders that Starfleet protocols existed for a reason. During a rescue mission involving a damaged civilian vessel caught in a plasma storm, he ignored orders to wait for additional support and attempted a dangerous extraction himself. He succeeded, saving the crew, but the decision resulted in a formal reprimand after another officer was injured during the operation. The incident forced Tav to confront that good intentions did not erase the consequences of his choices.

In 2397, Tav transferred to the USS Halcyon, a Nebula-class research vessel, where he served as Flight Control Officer and later Assistant Chief Flight Control Officer. Away from the constant pressure of exploration, he learned the importance of mentoring junior officers, coordinating with other departments, and trusting a team rather than relying solely on his own instincts. His most significant achievement came during a complex evacuation after the ship suffered propulsion damage during an atmospheric survey mission. Tav coordinated shuttle operations under worsening conditions, earning a commendation for his leadership and judgment. By the time he transferred in 2399, he had earned the respect of officers who once saw him as reckless, though he remained known for occasionally testing the limits of acceptable risk.

At age 27, Tav was assigned as Chief Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Meridian, an Excelsior II-class starship, where he finally held the position he had spent years working toward. His promotion was not based simply on his flying ability, but on his growth as an officer and his ability to inspire confidence in those around him. The Meridian was lost during a deep-space mission when it was caught in a cascading subspace anomaly that overwhelmed the ship’s systems. Tav was among those who helped coordinate the evacuation, staying at the helm until the last possible moment and ensuring the crew had a chance to escape.

In 2401, Tav applied for the position of Chief Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Resolute, a Sovereign-class starship and one of Starfleet's greatest ships of the line. After the loss of the Meridian, he sought a new assignment that would challenge him and put him back at the center of exploration. The Resolute offered exactly that: a chance to fly one of Starfleet's finest vessels, lead a flight control team of his own, and continue chasing the adventures that first drew him beyond Betazed. At 28, Tav joined the Resolute ready for the next chapter of his career, bringing with him years of experience, a reputation for daring, and a desire to see what awaited beyond the next star.
